R-474A: Daikin’s new refrigerant for ultra-low GWP A2L applications
Why a new Refrigerant?
The new EU F-Gas Regulation entered into force in March 2024. It will further drastically reduce quotas. R-474A is an HFO mixture of R-1234yf and R-1132(E). With an ultra-low GWP <1 it helps to meet the EU‘s ambitious climate targets set by the EU Green Deal and can be considered as quota-free for equipment manufacturers.

Safety
R-474A is classified as A2L in ISO817. According to EN378, it allows up to 4 times larger charging quantities compared to R-290, even taking into account the lower density of R-290. Residential heat pumps and air conditioners equipped with R-474A can be installed also in indoor or comparable locations where a highly flammable A3 refrigerant cannot be applied.
Efficiency & Performance
Efficiency depends on the size of a refrigeration and air conditioning system. With R-474A there is more flexibility in capacity dimensioning under difficult installation conditions. Bigger system components e.g., heat exchangers are possible and help to increase the COP. Critical installations that require a higher refrigerant charge are possible with the use of R-474A.
R-474A has a similar pressure range to R-290 and R-454C. Accordingly, it can be used in systems designed for these refrigerants – potentially as a drop-in.
R-474A shows comparable performance parameters, COP and volumetric cooling capacity – again same as R-454C and R-290.
With its ultra-low GWP and good safety profile, R-474A reduces quota consumption without compromising on performance, type of equipment and installation conditions.

Applications
R-474A can be used anywhere in systems that use A2L refrigerants and operate in the pressure/temperature range of R-290 and R-454C. Combined AC/HP systems installed indoors are particularly well suited for the use of R-474A. Furthermore, the conversion of existing systems, for example condensing units that are already designed for A2L, is also suitable for the use of R-474A.
